Retail & E-Commerce

Dynamics GP for Retail & E-Commerce

You sell through stores, a web shop, and maybe a marketplace or two, and every channel reports its own numbers while your ledger needs just one set.

  • 17.1%of total retail sales were e-commerce in Q2 2026
  • $340.2Bof e-commerce sales in that quarter
  • Aug 18, 2026date the Census Bureau released the figures

Last updated: October 21, 2026

Dynamics GP can run retail and e-commerce accounting when daily sales, returns, multi-location inventory, and multi-state sales tax post cleanly to the ledger. That posting work is where Argus helps retail finance teams.

Sound familiar? If your finance team spends the first week of each month reconciling those reports by hand, our Dynamics GP support and optimization services can show you where the hours are going. Start with a Free Business Assessment.

The Problem

Why Retail Finance Is Its Own Problem

The Census Bureau put e-commerce at 17.1% of total retail sales in the second quarter of 2026, about $340.2 billion, in data released August 18, 2026. For a controller that means more of your revenue now arrives through more systems than it did a few years ago, and every one of those systems keeps its own version of the truth.

Each system has its own idea of a sale. Payouts land on different days than orders. Refunds and fees show up after the month closes. A return can touch inventory, revenue, and a channel fee at the same time.

None of that is exotic. It’s a pile of small differences. And the ledger has to absorb every one of them, on time and without losing the thread, while the same team is also trying to close the month and answer the questions the owner asks every Monday.

Three channels, one ledger. GP doesn’t ship with a connector to a web shop or a point-of-sale system, so the middle box is the piece that has to be built.
Already Built In

What GP Already Does for Retail Work

Microsoft’s documentation shows GP handles more of this than people assume, which is good news for anyone who has been told the only fix is a new system.

The sources are the Sales Order Processing, Inventory, Invoicing, Intercompany Processing, and Multicurrency pages on Microsoft Learn. The posting-level detail comes from a Microsoft archive article, so confirm the setup options in your own version before you plan around it.
Retail needWhat GP does, per Microsoft Learn
Orders and returns Sales Order Processing supports quotes, orders, back orders, fulfillment orders, invoices, and returns. Posted returns can’t be transferred to other documents
Inventory across locations Tracks each item by site, or by site and bin. In-transit transfers use a via site so goods aren’t sold before they arrive
Posting detail Sales posting can be set to one journal entry per transaction or one per batch, which changes how much detail reaches the ledger
Sales tax Uses the customer’s tax schedule for delivered orders and the site’s tax schedule for pickup
Multiple companies Intercompany processing tracks due-to and due-from balances between companies, and multicurrency supports unlimited currency IDs
The Missing Piece

Where the Work Actually Is

GP doesn’t ship with a connector to your web shop or your point-of-sale system. The integration is the missing piece. It’s the piece we build, because custom integrations and system integrations are a core part of what Argus does for clients.

Here’s an example from a neighboring industry. A Southern California holding company with a restaurant chain and a food distribution business needed daily sales from roughly 30 locations posted to the general ledger. We built an integration that collects the data from their restaurant management platform and posts it, and we’re now moving it from summarized to detailed data so cash balances update alongside the sales. Their back office is small enough that every manual step we removed counted. That’s food service rather than retail, but it’s the same posting problem, and a multi-store retailer has it too.

  • Locations posting daily~30
  • Moving fromSummarized → detailed
  • Now rolling outElectronic bank rec

The same client closes on four-week financial periods instead of calendar months, and retail often does too. The National Retail Federation describes a 4-5-4 calendar, which splits the year into four-week, five-week, and four-week months so sales compare cleanly from one year to the next. The IRS defines a 52-53-week tax year as 12 consecutive months ending on the same day of the week. GP can support a fiscal calendar that matches. Set it up before year-end.

We’re also rolling out electronic bank reconciliation across that client’s store locations, so one process covers every one of them.

Multi-State

Sales Tax Across States

This is the part controllers lose sleep over. In June 2018, the Supreme Court decided South Dakota v. Wayfair and ended the rule that a seller needed a physical presence in a state to owe sales tax there. As of January 1, 2023, all states with a sales tax had adopted economic nexus rules, according to The Tax Adviser. South Dakota’s original law used more than $100,000 in sales or 200 or more transactions a year, and other states set their own thresholds.

GP applies the tax schedules you set up. It doesn’t decide where you owe tax.

That’s a tax advisor’s call, and we’d want one in the room whenever the schedules change.

Month-End

Returns, Fees, and the Close

The month-end close in retail runs on estimates, so you accrue channel fees, reserve for returns, and true up when the settlement reports arrive, and a controller who waits for every report before closing never closes.

That’s a process question before it’s a software question. Stephen Tanner, our founder, says it this way.

“Software solutions by themselves don’t solve business problems. Improved business processes enhanced by software solutions make a more meaningful difference.”

Stephen Tanner, Founder, Argus Consulting Group

So we start with how your close runs today, who touches it, and where the numbers sit waiting.

Three decisions come first.

Decision one

How much sales detail should reach the ledger each day.

Decision two

How returns get entered and by whom.

Decision three

Which fees you accrue instead of waiting for the settlement report.

They aren’t hard questions, but nobody can build the integration until all three are settled, and projects like this stall when they stay open.

Straight Answers

Objections We Hear

“Our sales platforms already report everything.”

They report sales. Reporting isn’t posting. They don’t post the entries, match the deposits, or agree with each other on a refund, and the ledger still needs all three.

“We might move to Business Central anyway.”

Fine, plenty of teams do. We do those migrations too, and whatever you build now should be built so it transfers. We’ll say plainly if a move makes more sense than more GP work.

“You’re not a retail specialist.”

We don’t claim to be one. Argus is a financial systems team, and the posting, tax, calendar, and reconciliation work in retail is financial systems work. Ask us for examples and we’ll tell you what we can and can’t show.

Timing

GP Timing and Your Options

Microsoft’s GP support, including tax updates, ends December 31, 2029, and security updates run to April 30, 2031. Argus has committed to supporting Dynamics GP through 2036 under the Argus 10-Year Commitment, and we handle migrations to Business Central when you’re ready. Your channels won’t wait on that decision. Neither should your close.

The Argus GP Pledge: Dynamics GP supported through 2036. Modernize on your timeline.
Our Pledge

GP Support Through 2036

7 years beyond Microsoft’s end-of-life date, and 5 beyond the security-patch cutoff. Your channels keep changing either way, so the ledger work in front of you doesn’t have to wait on a platform decision.

FAQ

Questions Retail Finance Teams Ask About Dynamics GP

Can GP post daily sales from our web store without hand entry?

Yes, through an integration that collects sales data and posts it to the ledger, though GP doesn’t include a web store connector on its own. Integrations can be custom-built or based on third-party tools. We build them, and we’d define the posting detail before writing any code.

Does GP track inventory across several locations?

Per Microsoft’s documentation, GP tracks each item by site, or by site and bin, and uses in-transit transfers so goods aren’t sold before they arrive.

How does GP treat a return?

Returns are a document type inside Sales Order Processing. Microsoft notes that posted returns can’t be transferred to other documents, so the return has to be entered correctly the first time. Your process should decide who enters it, and when, so the credit and the inventory land in the same period.

Do we owe sales tax in every state we ship to?

It depends on your sales volume and each state’s threshold, so ask a tax advisor. As of January 1, 2023, every state with a sales tax had adopted economic nexus rules. GP then applies whichever tax schedules you configure.

Is GP still a sensible choice for a growing online seller?

For many finance teams it can be, as long as the integrations are solid and the plan beyond 2029 is clear. Microsoft’s GP support ends December 31, 2029, and Argus has committed to supporting GP through 2036. If Business Central fits better, we handle that migration too, and we’d tell you either way.
