What Happens to Payroll Tax Updates After Dynamics GP End of Life

Last updated: October 27, 2026

Microsoft’s GP support, including tax updates, ends December 31, 2029, and we found no Microsoft promise of tax updates after that. Other providers are likely to offer them as a service, and rate-only changes can be made by hand.

TL;DR. If you run payroll in GP, watch December 31, 2029. Microsoft lists tax updates among the things that end then. What happens next isn’t settled. Stephen Tanner expects partners and vendors to offer tax updates as a subscription, though details are thin. Some changes only touch rates. Know which kind your payroll needs, and ask your partner for a plan now.

Payroll can’t wait. Tax rules change on their own schedule, and that schedule ignores your migration timeline. If you’re a controller or payroll manager trying to plan, our Dynamics GP end-of-life planning page is the best place to start, and below we’ve laid out what Microsoft has said, what we could verify, what’s still unknown, and which questions to put to your partner.

What Microsoft says

Microsoft’s GP lifecycle page covers tax updates under the Modern Lifecycle, and GP support, tax updates included, ends December 31, 2029. Security updates run to April 30, 2031. The date used to be September 30, 2029. MS Dynamics World reported Microsoft’s reasoning on the extension, which would let customers “meet their payroll and taxes obligations for the full year.”

Notice what’s missing. We found no Microsoft statement promising tax updates after December 31, 2029, and we found none saying a plan is required to receive them, so don’t assume either one and ask for the answer in writing. Gaps matter here.

How updates reach you today

Per Microsoft Learn, tax updates ship as .CAB files. An administrator installs them with all users out of GP. Microsoft’s community blog says the tax table update typically arrives in mid-December.

The most recent year-end update we found is US25YE, GP 18.8.1919, released November 5, 2025. Microsoft’s US year-end page says it has no form changes for 2025. It also says GP supports federal EFW2 e-filing only. There’s no SUTA e-filing.

So your team may already handle some filings outside GP, which is a useful baseline when you plan for 2030. Start there.

Here’s a timing question worth asking. A final update for the 2029 tax year would have to land before support ends, so ask Microsoft or your partner how the last tax table and year-end releases are scheduled.

Rate changes versus calculation changes

Not every tax change is the same size. This split is our framing, not Microsoft’s or the IRS’s.

Some changes only touch rates or limits. The Social Security wage base is $184,500 for 2026, up from $176,100 in 2025, per the SSA. California’s 2026 payroll rates, per the EDD, include SDI at 1.3% and ETT at 0.1%. Those are numbers to update. Easy.

Others change how a tax is calculated, such as new withholding tables and forms. The IRS publishes its 2026 federal methods in Publication 15-T. A new method likely needs more than a number swap. That’s harder.

Stephen draws the same line. “If the calculations are not changing, and all that’s changing are the tax rates, you can manually change those rates in GP,” he says, using a rate maintenance window. “That can be done by your dynamics partner or yourself, your payroll team.” Confirm with your partner which of your taxes that covers before you rely on it.

Who might fill the gap

Stephen expects the market to respond. “There are a number of organizations that are likely to pick up that requirement, pick up that capability, and provide it as a service,” he says. He describes a cooperative of GP partners looking at a subscription and service model for customers who want to keep running payroll past Microsoft’s support.

His caveat matters. “We don’t have all the details. But that’s pretty likely to happen.”

That’s an expectation and not an announcement, because we can’t point to any published pricing or terms, so don’t build a budget around it until your partner or another provider puts real numbers and dates in writing. Not yet.

Five questions to ask your partner now

  • What’s the last tax update Microsoft will release for GP, and when?
  • Do you expect a third-party tax update service, and who would provide it?
  • Which of our payroll taxes change by rate only, and which by calculation?
  • Who would make manual rate changes, and how fast?
  • What would moving payroll out of GP look like, and what would it cost?

Write the answers down. They’ll shape your 2030 plan. If your partner can’t answer them, our post on the signs your Dynamics GP partner has moved on may help you decide what to do next.

Questions about GP payroll tax after 2029

Will Dynamics GP still get payroll tax updates after 2029?

Microsoft’s lifecycle page ends GP support, tax updates included, on December 31, 2029, and we found no Microsoft statement promising them after that. Stephen Tanner thinks other providers are likely to fill the gap, but says the details aren’t known yet.

Can we update tax rates ourselves?

Possibly, when only the rates are changing and the calculation method stays the same. Stephen says your partner or your payroll team can use a rate maintenance window in GP. Confirm that with your partner first, because calculation changes need more than a rate edit.

What counts as a calculation change?

It’s a change to how a tax is computed, as opposed to a new percentage or wage limit. Withholding method and form changes are examples, and they likely need software support. This split is our own framing, not Microsoft’s.

Does GP handle every state’s payroll filing today?

Not according to Microsoft Learn, which says GP supports federal EFW2 e-filing only, with no SUTA e-filing. Your team may already file some returns outside GP. That’s worth knowing as you plan for 2030.

When should we decide what to do about payroll?

Well before late 2029, because payroll deadlines don’t move for migrations. Start by asking your partner the five questions above and getting the answers in writing. That gives you time to weigh a subscription service, a manual approach, or a different payroll system.
