Almost every Dynamics GP user has been told to migrate by now. The pressure is real, and some of it is justified — but “your system is end-of-life” is a reason to make a plan, not a reason to move this quarter. The honest answer is that it depends on what your system is actually doing for you today.
What the end-of-life dates really mean
Microsoft’s dates are specific: no new feature updates for Dynamics GP after December 2029, and security patches stop in April 2031. GP keeps running after both. Argus has committed to supporting it through 2036 — seven years past the feature cutoff and five past the patch cutoff.
So the deadline is real, but it is not this year, and it is not a reason to migrate before you are ready.
When the answer is probably “not yet”
If the complaints about GP are really complaints about configuration, a migration solves an expensive version of the wrong problem. We have seen this repeatedly: the “we need to replace GP” conversation turns out to be a reporting problem, an integration gap, or a workflow nobody automated.
Most companies use roughly 30% of what their financial system can do. Replacing a system you are using a third of tends to reproduce the same gaps on a new platform, at considerably greater cost.
When the answer is probably “yes”
Sometimes the system genuinely cannot keep up. The business has outgrown what GP was configured to handle, the reporting requirements have changed, or you need capabilities that are not there to configure. When that is the case, we say so — and we handle the move.
Why we have no incentive to push you either way
Argus runs both GP support and Business Central migration as service lines. We make money on each. That is deliberate: when we recommend staying on GP, it is not because we cannot do migrations, and when we recommend moving, it is not because we are chasing subscription revenue.
The sequence that usually works
Optimize now, integrate what is broken, and plan the migration for when it makes business sense. You get value from the system today, and when you do migrate you carry a clean configuration into Business Central rather than years of workarounds. The same team handles both, so nothing is handed off to a partner who has never seen your system.
